Check the watch. Some of them are compatible, while some aren’t. I have both a 101 and a 305. The 101 you can’t get a heart rate monitor for unless it is a special type of 101. On the other hand, any 305 is compatible with a heart rate monitor. I don’t know much about the 205, so just go into the “Settings” and then into accessories and see if you can connect a heart rate monitor.
I don’t think you can add a heart rate monitor to the Garmin 205
I’ve done some study on the FR 205, but I don’t own one. I have a feeling it has no HR support even if you wanted to upgrade and the product page does not make it obvious either.

If you want a HR monitor with GPS, you might be able to pick up a Forerunner 301 cheaply (under $100 USD) on Amazon or eBay. It has most of the same sports features as the 205, but is quite bulky and the GPS signal quality, weaker.
If you just want a HR monitor with no GPS, then there are plenty of cheap watches around. Like the Timex Ironman T59751 (around $50 USD).
I have a Timex Ironman HR Monitor page on my website, if you want some ideas: http://www.sportswatchinformant.com/timex-ironman-heart-rate-monitor-watch-models-compared
